ASTra

At this time, Hands & Voices New Mexico does not have a full-time, dedicated ASTra advocate due to the size of our chapter. Our advocacy support is provided through resources from Hands & Voices Headquarters, including educational materials, guidebooks, and the resource links available on this website. Families are also encouraged to ask questions and seek guidance through our GBYS (Guided By Your Side) program.

For families who would like to research on their own, we encourage you to explore the many advocacy resources available through Hands & Voices Headquarters, including the Second Edition of Educational Advocacy: The Hands & Voices Guidebook. These resources address common questions such as:

  • What laws support my child’s education?
  • What rights do I have as a parent?
  • What is the Communication Plan?
  • What is the difference between an IEP and a 504 Plan?
  • What services might my child be eligible for at different stages of education?

Navigating the school system related to a child’s learning needs can feel overwhelming. The ASTra Program—Advocacy Support and Training—was created by Hands & Voices to provide parents and professionals with education and tools to better support families through these processes.
