Hands & Voices Guide by Your Side (GBYS) program is a valuable resource for parents of deaf or hard-of-hearing children. Our Parent Guides advocate, offer support, and guidance to families navigating the unique challenges associated with raising a Deaf/HH child. With firsthand experience, our Parent Guides understand the journey and understand that each family has individual needs. They can tap into a vast network of local stakholders and Hands & Voices national chapters to provide assistance as required.
Parent-to-Parent Networking includes:
- Connection to practical resources: Access to state and national resources, including materials, recommended books, videos, and websites covering various topics such as Deaf culture, language development, bullying concerns, and even learning to swim or drive.
- Regional events that connect families, offer access to deaf/hh adults, and provide educational workshops, including fun activities like a painting party.
- Advocacy for families regarding IFSP and IEP development, as well as information on Special Education laws and community navigation.
- Coordinators specifically for Spanish-speaking parents and those with children facing unilateral hearing loss, or “deaf plus” considerations like autism or Down syndrome, ensuring tailored support.
- An experienced parent who can guide you in understanding your child's unique needs within the context of your family during this often unexpected journey.
